WHY MEN HATE THE IDEA OF GOING TO COUNSELING
(and what to do about it)

Some things I know about most guys are they:

  • Would rather get a tooth pulled that talk about their feelings
  • Would rather drive miles out of their way than stop and ask for directions
  • Want to fix things themselves rather than pay someone for help
  • Some beliefs lots of guys have about counseling are:

  • It’s all touchy-feely stuff
  • You lie on a couch and get analyzed
  • You will have to revisit your childhood
  • It costs too much
  • You don’t have time to go
  • It’s all just talk, talk, talk
  • It’s not a “guy thing”
  • Here’s a short list of some common “guy” challenges:

  • Marriage problems
  • Other relationship problems
  • Difficulty controlling anger
  • Work and financial stress
  • Feeling stuck and unhappy
  • Believing you aren’t good enough
  • Do you have a “guy” challenge you haven’t been able to solve? Do you need a solution now? Help could start, of all places, in a counselor’s office. Wait! Don’t go yet! I know that is not what you wanted to hear. Keep reading anyway.

First, you need the truth about counseling for guys:

  • Forget the touchy-feely stuff and expect concrete tools you can use to solve problems
  • Hardly anybody lies on a couch and gets analyzed anymore
  • It is useful for a counselor to know your significant childhood experiences, because that information often helps make sense of your circumstances today and gives direction for productive change
  • The estimated financial, physical health, mental, and emotional costs of not getting the help you need far exceeds the fees for counseling
  • Everyone sets priorities and makes time to do the things that are most important to you
  • Sometimes in counseling you need to vent (talk, talk, talk), but after venting you and your counselor need to get to guy solutions that work
  • What’s in it for you? In one or more of the following, and probably other, areas guys want successful ways to:

  • Solve problems
  • Find answers
  • Hear and be heard accurately
  • Feel understood
  • End tension
  • Stop fighting
  • Reduce conflict
  • Control anger
  • Eliminate the temptations of affairs and sexual addictions
  • Gain a new perspective
  • End hopelessness
  • Feel better
  • Some of the results of achieving these successes include:

  • Stopping patterns of behavior that just don’t work
  • Creating healthy relationships
  • Avoiding divorce and all the heartache and complications involved
  • Restoring attraction for your wife or girlfriend
  • Being a better father
